Fernandez Park

Fernandez Park is the 6-acre park at the centre of Old Town Pinole, at 595 Tennent Avenue, and it is the one most visitors actually use. Pinole Creek runs through it, crossed by a footbridge where ducks gather, and the gazebo at its centre can be booked. It is open 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily — city ordinance makes it unlawful to be in any Pinole park outside those hours.

The Fernandez name

The Fernandez name reaches back to the family that built Pinole's waterfront trade. Bernardo Fernandez, a Portuguese immigrant who arrived in the 1850s, bought this land from the Martinez-Tennent family. In the 1930s his son, Dr. Manuel Fernandez, donated the parcel to the city for use as a park, and it has served that purpose ever since. The park was substantially rehabilitated in 1990.

The same family's mansion still stands at the end of Tennent Avenue, a few minutes' walk from the park gate.

Parking and what visitors say

Parking, and what visitors say about it, is the one recurring complaint. The lot fills on busy afternoons, though street parking nearby usually absorbs the overflow. Visitors rate the park 3.4 out of 5 across 29 Yelp reviews, with the creek bridge and the gazebo drawing the warmest comments.
