Things to do in Pinole, CA come down to seven, and being honest about that is more useful than padding the list. This is a city of 19,000 people with no museum, no stadium and no rail station. What it does have is a very large piece of bay shoreline, an intact historic main street, and a view of the Golden Gate Bridge from a two-acre park most visitors drive past. Each entry below is ordered by how long it takes.

Half a day: walk the bay shoreline

Half a day is what the bay shoreline deserves. Point Pinole Regional Shoreline gives you 2,432 acres and a 4.06-mile loop with only about 112 feet of climb — flat walking with 360-degree views over San Pablo Bay to Mount Tamalpais. Parking is $5 per car, collected April to October. Take a rod if you like: no fishing licence is needed from the pier.

One hour: the historic walking tour

The historic walking tour is free, self-guided, and has 27 stops — the city publishes the route as a PDF. It runs through Old Town, past the 1915 Bank of Pinole, the 1874 Boyd Home and out to the 22-room Fernandez Mansion. Everything is flat and inside half a mile.

Twenty minutes: the Golden Gate view

Twenty minutes buys the Golden Gate view from Bayfront Park. Two acres at the end of Tennent Avenue, looking across San Pablo Bay to the Golden Gate Bridge, with a new trail and bridge running through to Pinole Shores Park for walking, running or cycling.

An evening: tennis until ten

An evening of tennis until ten is possible because Pinole Valley Park keeps its tennis courts open until 10:00 PM with button-activated floodlights, while every other city park closes at nine. Courts are first-come, first-served at 2955 Pinole Valley Road.

With children: the creek and the gazebo

With children the creek and the gazebo are the draw, both at Fernandez Park — playground, basketball, a gazebo and a footbridge over Pinole Creek where the ducks are. Six acres in the middle of Old Town, free, open 6am to 9pm. The gazebo and BBQ area can be booked from $20 an hour.

Saturday morning: the farmers' market

Saturday morning the farmers' market takes over — the Pinole Farmers' Market, where growers sell produce and artisanal goods directly. It is the one reliably local thing that happens on a fixed day.

Seasonally: the community events

Seasonally, the community events are what the town turns out for. The Pinole Classic Car Show and a Halloween-themed National Night Out both draw thousands, and the city runs a Tree Lighting Festival, a Spring Egg Hunt and a Halloween Carnival through the year. Dates move; check with the city before planning a trip around one.

What Pinole does not have

Pinole does not have a museum, a cinema, a stadium or a rail station, and pretending otherwise wastes your afternoon. Berkeley is about ten miles south and San Francisco about thirty for a bigger day out, and getting there needs a car or a bus to BART.
