Pinole Valley Park

Pinole Valley Park is the city's own big park — 231 acres at 1270 Adobe Road, inland from Old Town and up the valley. Where the shoreline park is for walking and views, this one is where the town plays: tennis, soccer, softball, skating and picnics, with trails running up into the hills behind.

Tennis courts and hours

Tennis courts and hours work differently here from the rest of the park —7:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily, on a first-come, first-served basis, with button-activated floodlights that switch off automatically at ten. Everyone must leave the courts at that point, and city-run programmes take priority.

The rest of the park closes at 9:00 PM and reopens at 6:00 AM, the standard hours for every city park in Pinole. Picnic grove and field rentals run at $20 an hour for residents and $25 for non-residents, through [email protected] or (510) 724-9800.

The oldest address in Pinole

The oldest address in Pinole is, in a sense, this park. In 1824 Don Ignacio Martinez — commandant of the Presidio of San Francisco — built his first adobe hacienda here, about three miles inland from San Pablo Bay, on the land grant that became Rancho El Pinole. The park occupies that ground. Nothing of the adobe survives above ground, but the valley's name and the road you arrive on both come from it.
