The Pinole Waterfront

The Pinole waterfront is small and easy to miss, and it holds the best view in town. Bayfront Park, at 1 Tennent Avenue, is only two acres — the smallest of the four Pinole parks — but it looks straight out over San Pablo Bay to the Golden Gate Bridge.

Bayfront Park

Bayfront Park keeps the standard city hours, 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM, and parking is free. Facilities are deliberately modest: BBQ grills, picnic tables, restrooms, and dogs are welcome. It sits at the foot of Tennent Avenue, the same street that runs up past Fernandez Park and the Fernandez Mansion — the whole of historic Pinole is on one axis, from the hills to the water.

The trail to Pinole Shores

The trail to Pinole Shores is the reason to come back. A newly built path and bridge now run from Bayfront Park through to Pinole Shores Park, open to walking, running and cycling, and it connects this stretch to the wider San Francisco Bay Trail network. It is flat, it is short, and it is the only piece of Pinole where you are properly on the water.

Why the waterfront is where the town began

The waterfront is where the town began, and the evidence is all gone. Bernardo Fernandez built his wharf and warehouses here in the 1850s, and for fifty years the waterfront did the town's business — grain shipping, then rail freight, then the powder works next door in Hercules. The full story is on the history page. Nothing of the wharf remains. The view does.

Waterfront or shoreline?

Waterfront or shoreline is a distinction visitors mix up constantly, because they are two different places. Bayfront Park is the town's own waterfront — two acres, at the end of Tennent Avenue, in Pinole. Point Pinole Regional Shoreline is the 2,432-acre regional park, run by the East Bay Regional Park District, whose entrances are in Richmond. Choose Bayfront Park for twenty minutes and a photograph, and Point Pinole for a four-mile walk.
